Denmark is one of the happiest places on Earth, according to a study conducted by the UN. It doesn’t strike as a surprise that Danish people are the ones that developed a specific lifestyle concept based on comfort, wellness, and contentment called Hygge. The word “Hygge” exists in both Danish and Norwegian language and it means “to give comfort, joy” and it’s been one of the most popular terms in 2016 when it swept across the globe and became widely accepted concept.

There are no constraints when it comes to exercising a “Hygge” way of life, on the contrary, some people have found a way to implement Hygge in their working environment in order to improve productivity. It’s a well-known fact that a happy worker is a productive worker, while employees that work while sitting on the edge have a hard time focusing their attention to work. Productivity is one of the most important aspects of any business, it benefits the customers, employer, and the worker. Being productive doesn’t always mean you have to work until you fall off your feet. It’s possible to enhance your productivity by making your working environment more “Hygge”.

Make yourself at home, while at work

Working in a sterile environment can make you feel uncomfortable and edgy, especially if you have to spend a lot of time in the office. Place some photos on your desk, have your coffee or tea mug nearby, decorate the corner of your office with a nice plant, and your office will begin to look more like home.

Let the music be your inspiration

Music helps people relax, it sets the mood straight, even works as therapy. If you enjoy listening to music don’t let your work come in between. Organize a list of your favorite tunes and let the music keep your juices flowing, however, mind the others if you’re sharing workspace. You can use your headphones and keep everybody happy.

Be friends with your colleagues

Work often brings together various types of people, and we can’t fit right in with everybody. However, what you can do in order to make your working hours more comfortable is simply be kind to people you work with, remember their birthdays, invite them to join you on your lunch break, but don’t insist if you notice a person is not in the mood to spend time with you – that’s not Hygge at all.

Mind your posture

Adjust your chair and your monitor so that when you sit, you don’t feel uncomfortable. If you work while your back is under a lot of tension, you’ll start feeling pain and won’t be able to focus on your work. If possible, bring your own chair or a back support pillow to the office.

Keep everything you need right where you want it

Customize your desk so everything you need for work is within your reach and you’ll speed up your work process. If you have to stand up and down all the time in order to do your job, you’ll spend more time exercising your body than finishing your work.

Work at your own pace

Our mind feels the work we do, no matter how complex, responsible, or challenging it might be. Take some time for yourself whenever you can. Keep your mind relaxed and never overwork yourself. If you put yourself under a lot of pressure, at one point you’ll begin to lose your focus and it will become more and more difficult to dedicate to work. Take short brakes outside and feed your brain with some oxygen regularly.

Dress comfortably

Our clothes influence how we feel by a great measure. If your jeans are too tight you won’t be able to move properly, you’ll feel the tension all day long, and your work will suffer. On the other side, if you dress comfortably and wear wardrobe you like, you will feel cozy and relaxed, which is the definition of Hygge, but more importantly, it allows you to concentrate on your work.

Conclusion

However, Hygge is a lifestyle, so don’t forget to practice the concept throughout your entire day, no matter where you are.
