Amino acids are chemicals which are found in the body and act as the building blocks of our cells and other tissue. They are compounds coded by DNA which form together I create many different proteins and tissues in the body, providing a unique and essential function to our bodies.

Amino acids are something which we produce almost all the time however we also get sources of these acids from the food we eat. If you are looking for a healthier way of life this year and you are heading into the fitness world, it is a good idea for you to ingest as many aminos acids as you can because they will be integral to your body’s recovery after exercise. Today we will have a look at some common amino acids and their uses.

1. Histidine

Histidine is needed in the body to help repair tissue, and it is specifically associated with the growth and repair of myelin sheaths, which are sleeves of fatty tissue in the muscles which help protect nerve cells. Histidine can be found in most meats, egg, pumpkin seeds, lentils and peanuts.

2. Isoleucine

If you have heard of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) you might know what Isoleucine is. 3. Leucine

Now to talk about the second of the BCAAs on the list, leucine. This is considered to be the most crucial amino acid for muscle growth and therefore it is something which you need to bring into your diet if you want to work out and gain muscle mass. This amino acid triggers mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin), which is a signal which stimulates the production of protein in the body.

4. Lysine

Lysine is an amino acid which differs from the previous 3 as it is not responsible for building muscle. It is used to create many of the hormones and antibodies we use every day and because of this, is essential for our survival. It plays a vital role in our immune system by giving us the tools to fight pathogens, and it can even stop viruses from being able to penetrate and take control of our cells.

5. Methionine

This amino acid contains Sulphur, unlike the others on this list. This means that it is effective in detoxifying the body in ways that other amino acids don’t. It protects the cells from pollutants, slows aging, and helps to improve the elasticity of the skin, making the skin younger.

Methionine can be found in meat, eggs, milk, Brazil nuts, beans, quinoa and lentils.
