From "The Register"

Sony's quarterly profits plunged 94 per cent following fall-out from its exploding battery woes....

Profit figures included a 51.2bn yen ($432m 340.9m (Euro)) provision for charges linked to the recall of nearly 10 million faulty laptop batteries Sony supplied to several manufacturers, including Dell, Lenovo and Apple. Sony had initially estimated a recall of 5.9 million units but that has increased as more manufacturers recalled batteries, including Fujitsu which recalled 287,000 batteries earlier this month.

Crikey! 300 million quid?? And that's before they begin to get sued by the computer companies that used the batteries for "loss of brand image and customer faith" or whatever they want to call it.

It does amaze me that only now is the extent of the Sony battery problem is coming out. And I bet there are still a few more exploding batteries out there somewhere.

Perhaps I'll hold off buying that laptop for now.... cheeky tongue

There's enough talk about Google buying YouTube at the moment so I won't clog the blogosphere further.

Except
to comment that if they were considering buying YouTube (which they
would have been for a while now), why the heck bother with Google Video in the first place?

Oh, hang on, I remember when I first looked at Google Video, I think the title of the entry says it all - Google Video - What Pants. cheeky tongue

After I found the following in The Register I realised how happy I am I've given up drinking cider.

Shame I was in the office when I found this or I would have wet myself laughing...

A partygoer drank 12 pints of cider, stole a goat from a
smallholding and took it on a backseat joyride in a Volvo he TWOCed
from a nearby farm.

The goat, an 11-month-old called Snowy, died two days after her white-knuckle ordeal.

It's the poor goat I feel sorry for. You can read the full story at the Regsiter here

The First Download Only (well, at least until the single goes on sale today) Single has hit the UK number one spot

More from "The Register" and "The BBC" and "CNN"

Hmm, the death knell for the old CD...

I should think so at £1.99 for only two tracks! (Or $3.44 for my American Readers)

The UK Government has almost (finally) passed its law on banning smoking in all Pubs and Clubs in England by the summer of 2007.

As a smoker this obviously affects me but to be honest I'm not too bothered about it. I know for one that I'll cut down considerably when they bring the ban in. It's also kinder to my friends and to the staff that have to work in these smokey conditions.

The Government reckon that 600,000 people will quit as a direct result of the ban and this got me thinking a bit (yes, dangerous I know!) on how much money is actually put into the government coffers by our "anti-social" behaviour.

I've done a quick bit of research and a bit of working out. You'll have to excuse my maths - I haven't done this since I was at University!

Based on a population of 59,000,000 there are 47,200,000 people over the age of 16 (legal smoking age in the UK)

Roughly 25% of these smoke so that gives us 11,800,000 (legal) smokers in the uk

If every one of these bought 1 packet of 20 cigarettes a day at 89% tax and an average cost of £4 a packet (I wish) that raises:

Per Day £....

I'll have to start a new category for this I think - perhaps the "We know better than you, even though we're stupid"

I thought this was some kind of joke to begin with.... alas not!

"Cingular applies to patent smileys Pointy Haired Boss

The United States' largest mobile phone network Cingular this week applied to patent on emoticons, better known as smileys.
"

Come on guys? Are you living in the real world?

I suppose I'd better get them in whilst I still can :

:-p :-( :-{

Now don't sue me! no
