I've just found this brilliant little tool that lets you run multiple websites under IIS on Windows XP Pro, 2000 etc.

As a developer I often need to run multiple sites and it's a pain to have to shift the root path around this tool does it for you.

Download IIS Admin from here

Updated: I decided to repost this to the top of the blog as it's been quite a popular page. The above website is now longer available but you can download a re-vamped version of the software from here:

Download IISAdmin.Net (free registration required)

If you don't have it already, you'll also need to download the .Net Framework 1.1 from here.

I love this program, it's a must for any web developer. Instead of messing about with the evil that is IIS Manager in Windows you can quickly swap and change websites from the taskbar - how neat is that? I reckon it saves me at least an hour a day with the number of projects I work on, can't be bad :)

[Warning.... Entering a slightly geeky zone]

A couple of few things have cropped up in the past two days that have caused a fair bit of hair pulling and have such simple solutions it's not true.

I'm sure at some point I will need to remember this information so I hope you don't mind that I put it here for future reference even if it is a bit off topic for this blog.

If you're not of a technical nature then feel free to fall asleep now... ;)

Problem 1 - Combining multiple SQL queries with sub-select statements (MYSQL).

I have a users table that I wish to join to a table containing the baskets that they have created and the languages of each item the user has selected.

I could have done this using multiple select statements or some kind of array and loop but this proved to be hugely processor intensive - something that we couldn't have as it the code's due to run on a shared server.

So, a colleague and I sat down and came up with a rather splendid query, much better than tonnes of evil joins .

Part of the problem also lay in the fact that we wanted a nice tabular layout for the results which wouldn't work with all of the queries I tried. It was fine for a....

An article on the BBC website states a shocking statistic that 97% of website's tested by website Accessibility Agency "Nomensa" are failing the disabled:

In the UK, the websites looked at included Marks & Spencer, Lloyds TSB, British Airways and The Guardian.

The BBC's website was not included in the survey.

The British Prime Minster's sites alongside the Spanish government site and the German Chancellor's site were the only three to conform to the most basic standards.

In order to reach the minimum standards - tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) - websites needed to provide adequate text descriptions for graphical content so that visually impaired people could 'read' pictures. 93% of the websites failed to meet those guidelines.

A further 73% failed to make the grade because of their reliance on JavaScript for some of the website's functionality. JavaScript does not work with some screen readers used by those with impaired vision.

Ninety eight percent did not follow industry web standards for programming code, meaning the foundations for web acce....

Ever looked at your task manager and wonder what all those dodgy looking files and service that were running are? Now you can find out. Head on Over to What Is That File, start typing and it'll start giving you suggestions in that Web2.0 way we all know and love. If the file isn't there and you know what it is, you can add it to their database.

Groovy!

All I wanted to do was to delete a database.

Do they have to make everything so overdramatic in PHPMyAdmin? cheeky tongue

It reminds me of something out of "Lost In Space"

Take a quick and simple test to find out which Linux distribution will most fulfill your needs.

Based on your computing expertise and what you'll be using the operating system for, it's a handy little quiz.

I found an interesting Link over at LifeHack which shows you how to turn your regular Hotmail account into a Windows Live Mail Account with no invite.

Visit http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/register-windows-live-mail-beta-for-free-with-no-invite.html

Then you can login to Hotmail normally to access your new account.

My first impressions are that there isn't a lot of difference except for the extra storage space and the preview pane and from what I can see you need to select every email in the junk folder to delete them rather than having the handy "Delete all and report" button.

The calendar functionality doesn't seem to have been improved which is a shame - perhaps they're waiting to see what Google comes up with before unvieling the new design?
