GTD/Productivity

When I had the chance to review Smart-To-Do List recently, I didn't think I'd find another productivity tool that would work so well for me, the only reason I'm not using it day-to-day is that it's unfortunately Windows only. So, I continued the hunt and the next program I found was "iGTD" - from the website:

You are a busy person, aren't you? And there's an easy way to track all things that have to be done... and to get those things done! iGTD takes some concepts from Getting Things Done methodology and makes them easy to understand and use in your every day life. But it's definitely not limited to the GTD concept - you can really use it the way you want.

When I first fired up the program, the interface did look a bit confusing and certainly not as simple and clean as Smart To-Do-List but there are a lot of handy tutorials on the site - in fact the program has some of the best documentation I've seen for a while for a free program.

The first step I took was to add a list of contexts. This w....

Blogging

Scott Karstetter contacted me recently to let me know that he'd launched a new blog called "Smart Productivity".

Scott's GTD-esq task management program is a joy to use (you can read my review here), although it is  Windows only (boo!), so when I heard he was launching a blog I couldn't wait to have a look.

Although it's in it's early stages, I can see Scott's blog as being one off the go-to places for productivity hints and tips from a software point of view - as well as here of course!

As Scott puts it:

The focus of the blog is to give tips and advice on software, GTD, to-do list hacks, productivity and life.

Some of the topics that will be discussed include software reviews, book reviews, interviews with productive personalities, lifehacks, and most of all, how to make your life better with technology.

So, head on over to "Smart Productivity" and add it to your feed reader, you'll be missing a wealth of information if you don't!

Review

I was contacted a while ago by Scott Karstetter of Smart To-Do List asking if I'd be interested in reviewing their new Smart To-Do List software. And, of course, never being one to turn down a free lunch I jumped at the chance.

I've written recently about the fact that I'm slightly unhappy with the way I'm managing my various tasks and was trying various things to see if I could improve my current productivity methodology. I tried using Thinking Rock as suggested by a reader but I didn't really get on with that (I'll put a post up about my experiences soon) and being a paper-based GTD freak I wasn't quite sure what to expect from their software - especially after my "nightmare" with Thinking Rock!

Smart To-Do List

Scott kindly provided me with a licence for the software so that I could try it out - the usual cost is $14.95 (approximately £7.90 at....

GTD/Productivity

I thought I'd share a nifty little Mac program with you all that allows you to elimiate desktop distractions and helps you to focus on what you're working on.

Doodim is a freeware application that hides all of the rubbish on your desktop and other open windows to allow you to concentrate on the task at hand.

So, here we have my usually messy screen with about 15 windows open:

Desktop clutter Pre Doodim

Doodim sits in the finder menu bar and can be activated in a couple of quick clicks to produce the following:

No Clutter here thanks to Doodim!

You can set varying levels of "darkness" and the dock stays above Doodim so that you can access your programs quickly.

CMD+Tabbing through windows brings the chosen window to the front and dims the others.

I only have two complaints, firstly that on a multiple monitor display, Doodim only works on the main ....

...Make fixing your crappy product almost impossible

I've a (legal) copy of a rather well known virus protection program on my PC, I shan't reveal the name of the company (*cough* begins with "M" *cough*) as I'm nice.

Just recently it stopped auto-updating for no reason what-so-ever. I think it had gone on strike due to overuse scanning all my dodgy downloads (but that's another story). I put off doing anything about it but as I'm quite quiet at work at the moment I thought I'd fix it. Simple, right? Just "Control Panel > Add Or Remove Programs > [Program Name] Change > Repair > Re-Install...." Do you think that worked? No it Flipping didn't.

At least I had an (unhelpful) error message to Google which pointed me to the manufacturers knowledgebase. Great, help at last! Well, not really as there were 5 different articles to choose from, all on the same subject but all with different solutions. Nice.

So, I tried the first 4 solutions and had no joy - crashing my machine several times in the process. The fifth solution? Install a new file over one that must have become corrupt. Okay, sounds good. Where is this file? That's where it gets annoying. The manufacturer's advice:

Re-install the file yyyyy.xml which can be
located in C:\blah\blah. The file yyyy.xml can be obtained from another
machine with a working copy of [product name]
