Explanation

Right, let me explain what went on yesterday now that I've calmed down a bit.

I'd had a nasty feeling that the meeting was going to be directed all at me in one shape or form and had a chat with My Secret Friend and Dad about it. Both recommended acting cooly, not jumping down people's throats and My Secret Friend suggested a couple of techniques she'd learnt to get my points across in a sensible manner that would make people listen to me.

They'd moved the meeting forward half-an-hour with out telling me (deliberate? I think so) so I hadn't had time to do my normal routine when I got into work. Pointy Haired Boss PHB#1 had a go before I'd even sat down. It was also engineered that I had to sit at the head of the table which felt really uncomfortable. Has this woman been taking lessons from Prision Guards in Iraq?

Anyway the meeting kicked off. PHB#1 asked X what had been the problem last week, X said that she'd not prepared anything as she didn't know that's what this meeting was about. I said, or tried to say "That's my point, lack of communication" but got told to "Shut up." How rude is that?

PHB#1 then bypassed me and asked Q what the problem last week was. Q said she didnt' have a problem and that "It was you that wanted the meeting, wasn't it?" To me, so I just sort of nodded and said nothing.

PHB#1 then came to me.

"What's been your problem this week?"
"Well, as I tried to say earlier, I think there's a lack of communication at the moment."
"What do you mean by that?"
"It just seems to me that we're all working at cross purposes at the moment, there's a lot of over-lap and we're confusing each other."
"Well, I think everyone knows their roles. It's well defined, it seems to be only you that has the problem."

Now it would have been nice if X or Q had spoken up here, both had voiced similar concerns to me over the past few weeks, particularly X who has, on several occasions 'phoned her clients only to find that PHB#1 has contacted them first and not bothered to tell X or make a note of it on the CRM software we use. To my mind that makes X look stupid and the company very unprofessional, but hey what the heck do I know?

So the character assasination continued....

"It seems to me," Went on the Pointy-Haired-One, "that it's you and your 'attitude' that's the problem. Your attitude and lack of respect are affecting X's attitude to her work as well."

Now X is old enough to be my mother. If she's that stupid to be swayed by me (which she isn't) then I'd be Queen of the flipping World by now.

I said nothing still, thinking about what My Secret Friend had said. I was doing remarkably well considering.

PHB#1 asked X and Q to leave so it was just me, her and the silently smirking PHB#2. Now if I'd had thought about what was going to happen I should have requested that someone sit in with me as a "witness" but I don't think the PHB's would have liked that. PHB#1 was doing the full on intimidation routine and was getting more and more wound up that I hadn't taken the bait.

She started up with the attitude thing again, saying that that I had been refusing to do things. I asked her if she was referring to Friday when I said I couldn't update the web forwarding on one of our domain names, that perhaps PHB#2 should do it as he had the necessary information. She said that it was my job I argued the toss with that and said that I hadn't been involved with any of it from the start and therefore didn't know the registrar, username or password. She said that I should have had that information any way. I said I wasn't aware I had to deal with that sort of thing but she said I should have known.

What? I'm supposed to be psychic now

I said that I obviously didn't know what my role within the company was and that there was overlap with me and PHB#2. I was told that I should know what my job is and it was my fault for not sending in an appraisal "What I see my job as" form. So I get to write my own job description too.

This went on for quite some time with her stating that yes, they took me on as something different and moved me over when someone left but I still should know what I was doing. It took me too long to do things and that basically when I did them they were wrong.

Now one would think that if this was an issue, and it by the sounds of it it was a major one then you'd have thought they'd have brought it up before.

The meeting witch-hunt then moved onto my attitude again. PHB#1 stated that I had two choices. Do things her way with no questions asked or leave. I said I'd take that under advisement and pointed out that when I questioned ideas her I was only doing so in the best interests of the company. She didn't seem to see it that way and said she wanted an answer by the end of the day. I said, "Fine, you can have your answer now. I resign, you'll have written notification by the end of the day." I also told me that the salary they were paying me was ludicrous so she kicked me out of the meeting rooom. And that was it.

I went to the pub to drown my sorrows and My Secret Friend joined me. Then Don Corleone turned up (a lovely surprise as he usually doesn't come out during the week). Both said leaving was the best thing for me. Then Zack turned up and said the same and then My Silly Friend turned up and also said I was best off out of it. We played loads of pool, drunk to much and the whole bunch of them cheered me up no end.

Perhaps friends aren't so bad after all....
