I sat down at 6.30pm and started reading
Artemis Fowl and I didn't put it down again until I'd finished it at 9.30pm.
What a book!
As mentioned yesterday, I know it's only a kids book but to be frankly honest with you I don't think it would be suitable for anyone under the age of 12, even though the writing style would be suitable for a seven or eight year old there are several graphic passages about people getting horribly injured or worse.
The basic premise of the story is that an Evil Genius wants to restore his family fortune (as they always do). The twist is that he wants to do this using Fairy Gold and that the Evil Genuis is just 12 years old.
The book introduces us to "The People", races forced to live underground due to an old war with Humans ("Mud People"). "The People" are made up of Fairies, Goblins, Dwarves, Sprites, Centaurs, all the mythical creatures you might expect! Dwarves have to be the best characters due to the unique way they tunnel through the ground and the way they get rid of the spoil after themselves (I'll leave it to your imagination).
Starting in Vietnam, an alcoholic fairy with a penchant for Rice wine is duped by Fowl and the story then moves from Under-the-world to Ireland and back again. The characters are interesting but we're not told a lot about them, both in terms of background and physical looks but even so you get a feel for what's going on.
I'd give it 8 out of 10 - well worth a look :)
