A review of "The Woman In Black"

To start off with it wasn't what I expected at all, it was set as a play-within-a play if you see what I mean which was a novel aspect to it.
The cast (all two of them) were very good, especially as they had to learn so many lines and one of the poor blokes had about 8 characters to play.
The story was a bit slow-going to begin with but soon picked up the pace just before the interval which I think was intentional. One loud bang (the loudest noise for 40 minutes) and half the audience nearly fell out of their seats.
The second half was fantastic - very atmospheric and creepy, and although I found the story cliched and somewhat obvious the direction moved with a pace that stopped you thinking "I know what's coming next" because by the time you were able to think that the moment had been and gone.
It's really made me interested in getting the book, which in retrospect I maybe should have read before watching the play.
The only thing that spoilt the evening for me was a bunch of school kids who are obviously studying the book for their G.C.S.E's. The girls were screaming at the sight of the Woman In Black, which in reality was more pantomimey than Freddie Kruger. One of them even burst into tears at one point.
Goodness knows what she would have been like at the first screening of the
The Exorcist. Probably scared herself to death I suppose...
